願はくは
花の下にて
春死なむ
その如月の
望月のころ
この和歌をご存知でしょうか？
西行法師（さいぎょうほうし）という、平安時代の末期から鎌倉時代の初期に生きた方が詠んだ歌です。
「花」とは桜のことで、
「如月の望月のころ」は旧暦の2月15日で、現在の3月末にあたります。
つまり桜の花盛りの時期ですね。
さらに、釈迦入滅の日でもあります。
出家の身として、とりわけその日に死にたいと願ったということですが、なんと、ほぼその願い通りに、旧暦2月16日に73歳で亡くなったそうです。
この歌は、わたしにとって特に思い入れがあります。
それは、わたしの父が好きだった歌だから。
父はALSという難病を患って2012年に亡くなったのですが、遺品を整理しているときに見つけたノートの最後のページに、この歌が書いてあったのです。
桜の時期にと願っていた父でしたが、亡くなったのはクリスマス・イブでした･･･。

Saigyo Hoshi (Buddhist priest Saigyo), an author of the poem was a famous Japanese poet of the late Heian and early Kamakura period. (1118 - March
23, 1190)
"Hana" means cherry blossoms, "kisaragi" means old Feb, but current end of March, and "mochizuki" means a full moon.
Furthermore, it is the day of Buddha's death, 15 Feb.
In other words, he wished to die especially on that day, because he was Buddhist monk.
And quite surprisingly, as he wished, he died in 16 Feb at the age of 73.
This poem is the special for me, because it was my father's last message.
My father passed away in 2012 after suffering ALS disease.
This poem was left on the last page of the notebook I found when organizing the remain things.
He might wish to die in the cherry blossoms season like Saigyo Hoshi, but his day was Christmas Eve.
